QuickBooks Payment Scams

Please be aware that phishing criminals are using QuickBooks’ popularity to send business email compromise (BEC) scams.

Scam description:  The invoice emails being sent with a “Review and pay” button will appear as if they are coming from a legitimate vendor using QuickBooks, but if the potential victim takes the bait, the invoice they pay will be to the scammer.

Here’s how to tell if an email invoice email from QuickBooks is legitimate:

  • Email invoices sent from QuickBooks arrive from Intuit.com. The invoices are created and generated from the originating vendor’s QuickBooks program, but the actual invoice is sent by Intuit.com, not the vendor.

  • QuickBooks email will address recipient by name (not “Dear Client”).

  • QuickBooks email will contain a PDF-version of an itemized invoice to confirm

Action to take:  If a suspicious email is received, contact the involved vendor using an alternate legitimate method (such as the vendor’s direct website) to inquire – BEFORE making a payment.
